Lorence is a painter, sculptor, Printmaker, and conservator. His education includes a Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art, study at Case Western Reserve, Parsons School of Design, and M.I.T., among others. Over the years, as a teacher of art, Lorence’s venues include Layton School of Art (Milwaukee), Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Maine, and the Portland School of Art. He has also taught printmaking at the Haystack School of Art on Deer Isle, Maine.

Lorence’s exhibition record is extensive. Highlights include the Detroit Institute of Art, Butler Institute of American Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard, the Maine State Museum, and Bowdoin College He has been awarded Residency Fellowships at the MacDowell Colony, and at Yaddo.

At different times in his long life, John Lorence has lived in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. His art has reflected these influences.
