DeMartini, the son of an Alabama fisherman, studied at the National Academy of Design with Ivan Olinsky and Leon Kroll. Connected professionally with the Whitney Museum, there is a self-portrait of him leading the Whitney Sketch Club. He divided his time between New York and Monhegan Island.

DeMartini exhibited widely. “The Wreck of the Saint Christopher” carries a 1950 label from the San Francisco Museum of the Palace of the Legion of Honor. Among other venues were the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. His work resides today in the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Metropolitan Museum, New York, among a long list.
